This assignment was originally created by D. Henderson, Lely High School.
This week, just like last, you will read an article, post a 300 word summary.  Your topic this week is "cross media convergence and synergy" but the information in the article will touch on most of the remaining bullet points in Section B of the exam.  After reading the article you should scroll down to last week's assignment and review the topics mentioned in the Section B explanation.  You should not wait too late in the week to begin reading this article since it is a little over 4800 words.

Here are two simplified definitions of media convergence and synergy to help you get started on the reading.

Convergence can be separated into at least two categories:
1. Technical convergence – in which technologies are used to pair media products: TVs with gaming consoles, PCs with CDs, Virtual reality kits with gaming consoles etc.
2. Corporate convergence – where companies converge to maintain control over ownership/rights and to maximize royalties.

Media Synergy is the way in which different elements of a media conglomerate work together to promote linked products across different media.

Due 2/13/20

Assignment 1:  Read the following article "Media Convergence 101"   Please read the entire article.  Although it is quite long and much of what you need to know is at the end, the beginning gives vital background information.  You will then post a comment to this blog post, of at least 300 words, on what you learned about media convergence and how this information relates to the genre or genres you have focused on this year.

Due 2/19/20
Assignment 2: Create a PPT in which you find 5 examples of Media Convergence and Synergy. These examples must be within the last 6 months to be current.  You should have at least 3 slides for each example.  Show what the convergence is what does, and how increasing visibility and market share for all parties.

Just in case you wish to look ahead at a sample exam and candidate responses from the most recently released responses, here are the links to do so.

Media convergence refers to the merging of previously distinct media technologies or an economic strategy deployed by media companies to create content across different platforms that work together. Media landscape has been changing and adapting throughout the 20th century. The first element of media convergence is technological. The second element is driven by industry. The third is social, as in social media. The fourth element is textual and contextual. There is a political aspect to media convergence. Media convergence isn’t a new concept; early radio shows partnered with newspapers.
Media convergence means that consumers expect to consume the content they want, when they want, and on any device that they want. This content is on the TV, web, radio, phone, computer, and other portable technology devices. Our society revolves around a multi-level convergent media where all modes of communication is constantly changing. This allows us to change the way we create, consume, learn, and communicate with each other.
Due to digitization, corporate concentration, and government deregulation, media convergence has been constantly developing. Converged communication allows consumers to choose how much they want to interact with the story and other types of delivery. This allows for better customer service and allows customers to get their needs tailored to their specific interests and technological needs. Convergence saves consumers lots of time because they do not need to worry about being at home at time to catch their favorite show.
Challenges in media convergence because security can become an issue, the companies face challenges, not everybody can access to digital media, and is can be a serious threat to economic viability. In the future, it seems as though hardware is diverging, and media content is converging. Also, companies will be trying to keep inappropriate content away from children

Media convergence has been happening more in the 21st century. It started in the started in 20th century but it did not take a big turn till this century. It has reached capabilities that one thought was not possible. There are different ways that one can describe media convergence. One way that it can described as is the media such as a newspaper being transformed into a technological way, like reading it on your smartphone or watching released movies on your smartphone as well. Another way that it can defined as media trying to produce a type of entertainment in a two-way stream.

A way people discuss media convergence is through the three C’s. The three C’s stand for computing, communication, and content, though at times consumption is also added. It is that these are the basis of the media convergence but there are more details to it. To be exact there are five elements to it. The first element is technological. Many people have now produced a technological outlet by producing things like podcasts. The second element is driven by industry meaning companies buying other companies, such Facebook buying Instagram. The third element is social media, where people post their film on medias like YouTube. The fourth element are textual and contextual meaning stories are expanded to different platforms like Harry Potter having its’ own game or Naruto having its’ own video game. Lastly, the fifth element is political into ratios, TV shows, and more. An example would be Apple music being one of the biggest companies producing music.

Overall, we have reached a point where everything is expected to reach our smartphones, tablets, and smartwatches. It is expected for media convergence to continue to blossom and having a higher visibility increased with each convergence. The 21st century has shaped the “easy” for information and entertainment to be viewed by the audience.
