Read the poem "Peruvian Child" by Pat Mora and respond to the following question relating to Making Inferences below:

Reread lines 17-20. What do the tourists want? What does this say about their values?
Adrian gonzalez

They wanted to see the fountain and take a picture of the child.they didn't want to interact with her

Your comments are correct, however what does this say about their values?

The tourists didn't care for the girl the just wanted to take the picture and move on. They treated her as a caged animal not wanting to interact with her and talk with her or entertain her. The tourist only valued the tour and the scenery

That is what the tourists wanted to do but what does it say about their values?

Andres S

Why do they not want to talk to her?

Gustavo H.
9/18/2014 02:55:05 am

The only thing that the tourists want is a picture but they do not want to interact with her because she is dirty.

Ms. Dixon

This is an interesting observation. Do you mean that the tourists have a "hands off" approach and don't want to get their hands dirty?

Gustavo H
9/19/2014 04:04:32 am

Yes because all the tourists wanted to do was take pictures and not interact with the poor little girl.

That's a good comment and analysis but why do the tourists want to take a picture of the little girl, and why would they not want to touch her just because she is dirty ?

Renescia C.

The tourists wanted to take a picture of the little girl. They didn't want to hold or touch her because she was dirty, but they wanted to capture how she looked, and was dressed as something they could show people when they got back home. It says that they don't really value anything and that their just there to take pictures because they're not trying to interact with the little girl or care about how she looks because they're taking pictures from a distance of her.

Ms. Dixon

This is a very good start for an analysis.

It's very detailed and i certainly do agree. If you were a tourist what would you have done?

That's a lengthy and detailed observation. I whole-heartlessly agree with you. The people want her picture as a souvenir but nothing else.

The tourists want to show that they visited a third world country and explain to their friends how it was to make it look as if they are humble when in fact they are not.

They believe that they are higher and better than everyone one in that country and it shows that they value themselves only and that they are very selfish

good observation but what makes you think its a third world country ?

I Agree The Tourist Seemed To Care Little About There Whereabouts And The Environment Around Them.

Wow, Aaron I completely agree and I you've given me a new way to look at these tourists

They wanted to take a picture with the poor little girl by the fountain of youth . It shows that their value are about themselves , they didn't really care for the little girl they wanted to just take a picture from a distance of her in it .

I agree with you opinion but why do you think the girl needed help?

The tourist wanted to drink from the fountain and also they wanted to take a picture of the Peruvian girl . There values are that They aren't caring and also self sintered not caring about the cares

The Tourists Seem Mean And They Seem To Not Care About The Little Girls Feelings Or Her Hardships In Life. They Were Just Shallow Enough To Take Pictures For Show When They Get Home.

good opinion but do you really think the people where harsh or they knew they couldn't make a change so they didn't attempt to.

Renescia C.

That's a great observation but how do the tourists seem mean or how do they display that they don't care about her feelings or hardships ? If she obviously looked dirty why would they want to touch or interact with her, unknowingly because she could very well have had diseases or a sickness.

The tourists just want to go through the tour, look at the sights, and take pictures. They don't want to interact or help any of the natives. This tells me that their values are somewhat skewed. They see a poor child that but they don't talk to her or help her in any way. They seem to be uncaring for others and materialistic.

You couldn't have said it any better

That's a great observation and a good point

The tourists only wanted to visit, look, and take pictures of different sights in Peru, they really didn't want to help or interact with the little Peruvian girl. This tells us they're cold hearted and uncaring in a way.

That's a great comment you're so smart

9/19/2014 04:12:12 am

Great answer but in what way are they uncaring?

Andres S
9/19/2014 04:13:26 am

The tourist didn't care for the little girl and just wanted a picture. They have bad morals and don't have any care for human life.

Deandre
9/19/2014 04:19:15 am

The tourists simply want pictures of the poor, sickly villagers to document as a vacation memory. This shows a vast amount of hypocracy in their values.
