Chillingworth is described as a small, petite man who emanates an aurora of college taught intellect shrouded in newfound savagery. True to his appearance Chillingworth is remarkably intelligent and thoughtful. Along with his intellect lies a cold harsh aspect of Chillingworth's personality. He is shown to be in some ways a heart broken soul bent on revenge and mischief. Along with this chillingworth shows great patience motivation and extreme determinedness. This along with a few a hints of meek arrogance
Themes: Sin, puritanism , conformity
Symbols: jail
Rhetorical Devices: Description, Diction,

I agree with you he seem to have a mean vengeful emotion towards Hester but underneath his exterior I feel he was just heart broken by Hester actions

I completely agree with you. It seems like he has such like hatred towards Hester. I feel as though it is just a front. He is just truly hurt by Hester's actions.

Chillingworth is introduced to the reader as Hester's husband. He is seen as someone who is short but whom has extreme intelligence and when meeting the eyes of Hester Prynne, a powerful emotion sweeps through his own. Roger describes himself as a physician and is later asked to aid Hester and her daughter. There, he begins to ask questions about who the father is and even though Hester doesn't reveal who it is, Chillingworth states that it will be revealed to him through the adulterers heart. There is irony in this scene because of the fact that Chillingworth is demanding to know who the father is yet he should be the father of the child since he is Hester's husband. The narrator also uses foreshadowing to show reference to Dimmesdale who dies because of the secret in which he holds in his heart and the pain in which he is in. The theme that is implied in this chapter is that guilt can destroy a person, body and soul.

I agree with you Jasmine. Although I can't say that the theme is necessarily that guilt can destroy you.

You would actually be very surprised on how much guilt can destroy in anyone's life.

Chillingworth is describe as a very smart intelligent man. The narrator is descriptive when describing him. A smart, intelligent, small, short man. He is the husband of Hester. Some themes and symbols used in these chapters are… Description, Imagery, and Diction. The overall theme for these chapters would have to be Obey the law, and sin.

The narrator presents Chillingworth as an intelligent man and as Hester's husband . The symbols that are used are description and imagery. The theme consists of punishment for ones actions and sin.

Jasmine M.

I agree with the theme as well, the crime that Hester committed, only involved her punishment but there was more than one person involved. So therefore the narrator is implying that the other person who committed adultery should be punished for what they did.

I disagree, though sin is an overall theme in the book, in these particular chapters it focuses on the punishment and her husband.

The Narrator describes Chillingworth as a very small but intelligent man who . Is married to a woman named Hester Prynne she brings out the best in him. He's a exceptional writer who is underrated. symbols used are description, and diction. Theme is the punishment that must be served for ones transgression.

The author presents Chillingworth to the reader as not only the husband of Hester but , a man that is Intelligent, delicate and small statured . When describing Chillingworth the author uses imagery and description.

Chillingworth is describe as a very intelligent man. Who is also Hester Prynne husband, the narrator describes him as a short small man, but seems to be a harsh angry man, As it seems his personality is brought on by Hester adultery and the birth of the child he knows which is not his. Underneath Chilling worth hard exterior seems to be a man that is just heart by his wife actions. Themes sinfulness and pushiment, symbols the child and the jail and some rectorical devices diction and anaphora.

Firstly, "Chillingworth", as he is called, is presented as a stranger; an observer, unlike any other that stand before the scaffold of shame. He is a lender, aged figure with uneven shoulders. The author uses description to give the reader an idea of said Chillingworth and his significant placement in the setting and story.

I agree with your statement that he has a significant place in the story. The author very intelligently made him stick out particularly in the crowd where Hester sees him.

I agree with you young Deandre. Chillingworth is a central character that thickens the plot in the rising action between he and Hester.

Chilingworth is a very smart man who is married to hester. he uses description in the chapter the theme is based on sinning

The description of Hester presented at first is mostly physical. He is not presented as being too handsome, on the contrary he is shown to have some particularly unfavorable features. He is short but emits an aura of intelligence. We further dig into his thought process with the conversations he has thought the chapters. He seems to be very ashamed of what has happened, not wanting to be named, but he also wants revenge on whoever the baby's father is.

Hester's husband, Chillingsworth, appears to be a jealous husband who seeks revenge. He is willing to find her adulterer at all cost. Hester perceives him to be a demon because of his eerie smirk and persistence to divulge her lover for his satisfaction. The theme is jealousy and anger, which controls his very actions to expose her adulterer.

The narrator shows Chillingworth, as the husband of Hester Prynne and and who was anxious to find the person who committed adultery with her even if he has a high power. Chillingworth is also shown to be a man of wisdom and knowledge. Theme is punishment and sin.

Chillingworth is first presented as a mysterious stranger, seemingly unrecognizable by any of the spectators, and is only recognized by Hester, due to his uneven shoulders. He is dressed in a odd combination of European and native american dress. The author shrouds chillingworth in mystery, foreshadowing his future influence on the story.

I agree with your statement claiming that Chillingworth is mysterious, odd, deformed, & dressed oddly.

Chillingworth is a small deformed man with uneven shoulders. He's also Hester's husband. Never minding his small stature he is a very intelligent man although he can be very twisted and deceitful. In this chapter I noticed a lot of description and imagery used to describe the character Chillingworth.

How does the narrator present Chillingworth to the reader? Discuss themes, symbols, and rhetorical devices in these chapters.

The narrator presents Chillingworth to the reader in a mysterious manner. As Hester stands before a crowd of people she sees this man who questions the occasion of the gathering and also the father of her 3 month old child. He is described to be short yet filled with knowledge and intelligence . The narrator's strange introduction institutes a tone of suspicion and anticipation. The themes presented are punishment and public persecution.

Most of the comments on this topic seem to be superficial and lacking in depth. Hawthorne very carefully crafts Chillingsworth's character from the choice of his name to his appearance when he first enters the action. In future comments, please address the diction and syntax used when addressing the response topic.

the narrator introduces chillingworth as not that bad of a bad, mostly him being a decent person before the adultery situation begins
