Explain Hester’s argument concerning her rights to Pearl. Discuss themes, symbols, and rhetorical devices in these chapters.

Hester's argument concerning her right to Pearl is the fact that Pearl was someone that God gave to her to punish her everyday because of the fact that she is the making of the scarlet letter, Pearl, who is dressed in scarlet red is a constant reminder of what she did in the past. Even though she says all of this, she is forced to use the relationship that Dimmesdale and her have in order to win the council over. Dimmesdale willingly gives in and states that to take Pearl away from Hester would be messing with the ways the Lord wants it to be and also removing her punishment away. He says this with a hand over his heart and this relates to the comment that Chillingworth made about reading the heart. Dimmesdale is attempting to cover his secret and his relationship with Hester. A symbol in this chapter is Pearl's comment on where she was brought up from which she stated that she was "plucked from the rose bush outside of the prison door". Because of the fact that the rose bush is a symbol of passion, it can infer the relationship between Dimmesdale and Hester. Hawthorne also foreshadows the meeting between Hester and Dimmesdale in the forest when Hester is invited to go there with Mistress Hibbins. The forest is an ungoverned place and therefore the perfect place to talk about unlawful things. There are two themes in these chapters which are towards guilt and how it can ruin someone and also the recognition of ones weakness in order to grow as a person.

I agree with you, the concil of the Puritain society had no right to take pearl away from Hester; Pearl is gods punishment and blessing upon Hester.

Hester’s argument concerning her rights to Pearl are that she tells the men that she will be able to learn about her mother's lesson , the one which Hester herself has learned from her shame. The themes, symbols, and rhetorical devices in these chapters are guilt, shame and Hester's sympathy towards pearl.

Hesters argument is that Pearl can see the humiliation that her mother goes through so she won't be able to make that same mistake Hester did that easily. She also took advantage of having a relationship with Dimmesdale to win. Theme is guilt and fear of the consequence.

I disagree, Hester used her own clever thoughts to appeal the the authorities about taking her daughter away. Though it may have helped that she knew Dimmesdale and he felt guilty he wasn't the only one deciding.

The scarlet letter is that of demeaning embarrassment. The Scarlet letter in itself serves as a daily reminder to the people of town and Hester herself of her sin against god. For this sin Hester is the outcast of town. She is constantly tormented and ridiculed by women, men and children alike. Even Hester's daughter Pearl is outcast due to her mothers sin. Often seen by herself, pearl can be described as a wild yet intelligent girl with an ill temper.

Hester shouldnt have Pearl taken away from her you're completely right but what were the rhetorical devices you think were implied in this chapter.

Tariq, this is the same response that you wrote to post 4. This is not an acceptable reponse.

Hester’s argument concerning her rights to pearl is that hopefully she will learn from her mother mistake. Although Pearl was a punishment given to Hester because of what she has done. The main theme for these chapters would have to be guilt because during the argument guilty is being portrayed in all aspects.

I completely agree with you. Her argument with pearl was just to show and try to teach her to learn from her own mistakes. The main theme of this chapter was just all around guilt. You could feel like guilt while reading the chapter.

Hesters opinion is that Pearl can see the shame in her eyes therefor she wont have the same fault. The themes, symbols, and rhetorical devices in these chapters are shame and guilt.

I agree with your statement. Furthermore, Hester argues that the child is a constant reminder of the sin that she committed against God.

I absolutely agree with you she understand that the child is a blessing but also that she would learn from her mothers mistake.

Hester has come to the conclusion that Pearl is her divine punishment from the Lord for her crime. The Puritan society are now obligated to let Hester keep her child because to take away her child would be to tamper with God's will. This chapter is focused on guilt within one's self and how making a mistake may not only affect the person but others around that person.

I agree with Deandre the chapter does deal with guilt she didn't think how it will effect people around her.

I agree Deandre. The Puritan society wants to constantly remind Hester of her shame by attempting to take Pearl away from her because they believe Hester is a curse and her daughter.

Hester argument is that she has a right to keep pearl because she can teach pearl to not make the mistakes that she made. They can't take the child away they will messing with gods choice. since that was god punishment for her. this chapter is about guilt

Hester uses two reasons in order to keep her child. First she says that she would be able to teach the child a lesson about her own mistake. That reason doesn't work too well so she resorts to a second reason which was that the child was given to her by God and that it was both a blessing and a constant reminder of her mistake.

I agree there was a point when she wanted to teach her daughter Pearl from the mistakes that she has made in the past but then again she didn't want it to seem as if Pearl was a mistake therefore she shows her to be a blessing that God provided her with. The theme is guilt.

After the government and some of the townspeople start to see Pearl as some sort of "Demon Child" claiming that's a reason she should be taken or the simple fact that Hester Is an unjust mother. Hester the argues the fact that Pearl will learn from her mothers mistakes and faults. Hester also uses

Her relationship with Dimmsdale so things can go in her favor. I see foreshadowing in this chapter.

Hester Prynne makes the argument that Pearl is a blessing in disguise for her. Hester wants to teach her her daughter about shame and how it has made her strong-minded. There are two symbolisms that are present, the mansion and Hester's reflection in the armor. The mansion, which is stuffy and severe, represents the governor's personality and the reflection of the scarlet letter dominates Pearl's fascination of the armor which reminds Pearl of the shame that they both experience..

In order to appeal to the authorities trying to take Pearl away, Hester has to appeal to their thoughts. In order to do this she must stray away from the normal answers a loving mother would give and instead think like an ashamed sinner. Hester then argues that Pearl was given to her by God in order to punish her everyday since she was the beginning of the scarlet letter. Therefore Pearl being dressed in scarlet red is a recurring reminder of her sin.
The themes presented by this are desperation and manipulation. The color red is supposed to symbolize sin and the threat symbolizes the authority the Puritans had

Hester's strength, honesty, and compassion carry her through a life she had not imagined. While Dimmesdale dies after his public confession and Chillingworth dies consumed by his own hatred and revenge, Hester lives on and becomes something of a legend. The scarlet letter made her what she became, and, in the end, she grew stronger and more at peace through her suffering. She learned from her mistakes.
